In order to advance to the quarterfinals in Adelaide, Soon Woo Kwon made the most of his second chance. He entered the main draw as a lucky loser and defeated Pablo Carreno Busta and Tomas Machac after losing in three sets to Tomas Machac in the final qualifying round. The South Korean No. 1 has advanced to the ATP tournament quarterfinals on several occasions. He received a lucky-loser spot and a bye in the first round of the ATP Eastbourne main draw in 2021, and he went on to reach the semifinals.
Mikael Ymer, in contrast to Soon Woo Kwon, performed flawlessly during the qualifying rounds and battled through difficult three-set victories over Mackenzie McDonald and Emil Ruusuvuori to advance to the quarterfinals in Adelaide. Prior to 2022, the Swede had only played in three quarterfinals on the main tour, but his performance last season—six quarterfinal appearances—showed a marked improvement. Nevertheless, despite these impressive performances, he was unable to significantly advance in the ATP rankings and even momentarily dropped out of the top-100 group. Last year, he had a 3-3 record in ATP quarterfinal matches, with four of those matches going the full two sets.
