After defeating qualifier and world No. 180 Joanne Zuger 6-2, 6-2, Wang Xinyu advanced quickly to the second round. The seventh seed won half of the points on first-serve return and 12 out of 18 on the Swiss player’s second serves. She had lost her first Hua Hin match three years prior in the opening round. She overcame her 0-5 record in last-16 matches during the 2022 season when she competed in Hobart as a lucky loser and defeated Olivia Gadecki and Alison Van Uytvanck to advance to her fourth WTA quarterfinal. She had previously competed in quarterfinals in Linz in 2021, Prague in 2021, and Courmayeur in 2021.
Lanlana Tararudee, a local wildcard who was ranked 365th, was drawn as Mirjam Bjorklund’s opponent in the first round. It wasn’t a match where everything went her way; the world No. 153 broke seven times while getting broken no less than four times. She overcame all opposition in 77 minutes to win 6-2, 6-4. The 24-year-old Swedish player has now advanced to the second round of a WTA competition twice. In her first tour-level main draw appearance since 2017, she defeated world No. 537 Yuliana Lizarazo and No. 171 Renata Zarazua in April of last year to advance to the Bogota clay court quarterfinals.
