Malik Obama, the older half-brother of former US President Barack Obama, has taken to social media to express his longstanding discontent with his younger sibling. In a recent series of candid tweets on X (formerly Twitter), Malik unveiled a rift that has deepened over the years, punctuated by pointed accusations and political preferences.
The tensions came to light when Malik posted an old photograph of him and Barack together, accompanied by a caption that outlined his frustration. In the post, Malik lamented having buried several family members without his brother’s presence by his side, and he questioned the authenticity of Barack’s achievements, including his Nobel Peace Prize and presidency. The post concluded with a scathing remark: “What kind of brother is that? Fake as A Snake.”
This social media showdown wasn’t an isolated incident. Over the past few days, Malik has unleashed a barrage of tweets, criticizing Barack’s character, labelling him a “fake as a snake,” “a snob,” and even a “traitor.” Malik’s tweets, often marked by acerbic language, also showcased his support for former President Donald Trump, whom he urged his followers to vote for. He even sported a red baseball cap bearing the slogan “F Biden.”
The tumultuous relationship between the half-brothers is not new. Malik’s dissent dates back to Barack’s presidential victory in 2009, which marked a turning point in their rapport. Despite once sharing a close bond, their differences have been magnified in recent years. Malik’s support for Trump during the 2016 election fueled the flames of controversy, as did his participation in a Trump campaign event.
Their discord extended beyond political leanings. Malik’s intentions to establish the Barack H. Obama Foundation in their father’s honor led to a heated exchange, with Barack allegedly threatening to “cut [Malik] off” if he proceeded with the idea.
While Malik’s opinions may garner attention, Barack’s other siblings have taken different paths. Maya Soetoro-Ng, Barack’s maternal half-sister, maintains a supportive relationship with her brother and is involved in educational and peace initiatives. Auma Obama, Barack’s paternal half-sister, runs a foundation supporting underprivileged girls in Kenya. Mark Okoth Obama Ndesandjo, another half-brother, resides in China as an entrepreneur and musician.
Despite the complex dynamics within the Obama family, Malik’s public airing of grievances has put their strained relationship in the spotlight once again.
