David Kozak, aged 24 (August 12, 1999 – December 21, 2023), was a student at Charles University known for a devastating event in Prague, Czech Republic. In a tragic turn of events, he carried out a mass shooting that resulted in the loss of 13 lives and injuries to 25 individuals. This tragic incident not only impacted the university but also resulted in the loss of his father at their home.
The fatalities, including fellow students and at least one professor, all occurred within the university building. Among the injured were ten individuals in serious condition, including three foreign nationals—a Dutch citizen and two Emiratis.
The shooting from the assailant’s position on a rooftop also caused harm to three people on the streets, damaging both civilian and police vehicles.
This heartbreaking event marks the most devastating mass murder in modern Czech history, surpassing even the Bohumín arson attack of 2020. It stands as one of the deadliest mass shootings in Europe since the tragic Bataclan theatre massacre in 2015.
David Kozak was reported missing by his mother
On December 21, 2023, at 12:20 CET, a distress call from a worried mother alerted the police about her son’s potential self-harm while en route from Hostouň to Prague.
Shortly after, at 12:45, the police found the individual’s father deceased at their home, complicating the search due to unexploded improvised explosive devices.
Investigations uncovered that the individual was a student at Charles University’s Faculty of Arts, scheduled for a 2:00 PM lecture. A swift search warrant, highlighting the person’s armed and dangerous status, prompted immediate action.
Concurrently, security measures unfolded at Václav Havel Airport Prague, where the perpetrator’s father worked in airport security.
As a precaution, the Faculty of Arts building on Celetná Street, the slated lecture venue, was evacuated by 2:22 PM. Despite extensive efforts, the perpetrator was not found within the premises or nearby. The situation remains ongoing as authorities continue their search.
