Morgan was the son of poet and co-founder and long-time editor of The Hudson Review, George Frederick Morgan, heir to the Ivory Soap fortune. Seth attended Berkeley for a short time. He began a relationship with singer Janis Joplin after dropping out and was her fiance in 1970. Their connection was first made public in Joplin’s obituary in Time.

Morgan’s only book was Homeboy, a story about heroin addicts and convicts. Morgan drew on several personal experiences to write it. Morgan won the P.E.N. essay contest for prisoners while sentenced to prison in the 1970s. Morgan was living in New Orleans’ Lower Garden District at 1232 St. Andrew Street, a rented apartment owned by Metairie resident Marcel Jaffe, from 1986-1987, when he generally managed to put his demons at bay.

Morgan received positive reviews and book-signing engagements in several cities after the publication of Homeboy in the spring of 1990, including San Francisco, where he had stabbed a bystander’s hand with a knife during an armed robbery 17 years earlier.

On Tuesday, October 16, 1990, Morgan was arrested for DUI in New Orleans. Morgan left a New Orleans bar the next day, hopped on his bike with girlfriend Suzy Levine, and crashed into a cement overpass below the New Orleans bridge.
