For a decade, the cover of the Illinois Central system timetable carried illustrations of the Chicago lakefront. All purported to show the view from the top of Great Central Station, which burned in the Great Fire of 1871. The depot’s arched train shed, however, was never rebuilt.
We couldn’t fit all the great historic images that we collected in our February 2019 feature story on Chicago’s Van Buren Street Station so we’re sharing the outtakes here. The station, a true gem of Chicago history, resides between Grant Park and Michigan Avenue just a few hundred feet from Lake Michigan.
