Anju Bobby George was born on April 19, 1977. She’s a retired track and field athlete from India. Anju was born into a Syrian Orthodox family in the Kochuparambil household in the Cheeranchira village of Changanassery taluk, Kottayam, Kerala, to K. T. Markose. At the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris, Anju Bobby George won the bronze medal in the long jump and made history. She jumped 6.70 meters (22.0 feet) to become the first Indian athlete to ever win a medal at a World Championships in Athletics. She went on to compete in the IAAF World Athletics Final in 2005, where the top eight athletes in the world competed. She won the gold medal there, which she views as her best performance.

After succeeding in the World Athletic Meet, she was given the Arjuna Award for eminent athletes by the Indian government in 2002–2003 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the nation’s highest sporting honor, in 2003–2004. In 2004, she received the Padma Shri, the country of India’s fourth-highest civilian honor. An upper respiratory tract infection caused Anju Bobby George to withdraw from the 52nd national interstate athletics in Hyderabad. The Kerala State Sports Council (KSSC) named Anju as its president. On June 22, 2016, she submitted her letter of resignation.
