Jason Pires is a co-anchor on the popular Canadian show CTV Morning Live, which a lot of people watch.
Jason, who has won the Edward R. Murrow Award and the RTNDA Award more than once, is always looking for something new and exciting to show. He says that people invite him to their homes all the time. People want to tell Jason their stories, which are sometimes very interesting and personal.
Jason thinks it’s a privilege to be able to listen to other people tell their stories. Pires likes his life and his job as an anchor, which he says is a pretty unusual way to make a living.
How Jason Pires got his start and what he did with his life
Jason was born and raised in Victoria. He got his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Victoria, where he also played varsity soccer.
After taking a year off to see all of Europe, he went back to BCIT to finish his degree in Broadcast Journalism. The next year, he went to work for CHEK-TV in his hometown as a news reporter.
In 2001, when a brand-new TV channel was being set up in the capital of British Columbia (now called CTV Vancouver Island), Jason was the first sports director, host, and reporter for the channel. Under his leadership, the sports section became the most important source for sports news on Vancouver Island.
After more than six years at CTV Vancouver Island, Jason was ready for a change. When the 2010 Vancouver Olympics were announced, he was excited for a new adventure. He jumped at the chance to work in the sports department at CTV Vancouver, which is the official network for the Olympics.
The crowning achievement of Jason Pires’s career
Jason’s reporting on the Olympics and Paralympics in Vancouver/Whistler is without a doubt the best thing he has done professionally so far.
Jason knows it will be hard to do better. But the Vancouver Canucks’ run to the Stanley Cup finals in 2011 and the Vancouver Whitecaps’ first season in the Major League Soccer (MLS) came close to being Jason’s other career highlights.
Pires went to Phoenix to see Steve Nash win NBA MVP for the second time in a row, which was another amazing event. The NBA player who will one day be in the Hall of Fame was friends with Jason when they were kids. They played baseball and soccer together in Victoria.
